Après les coffrets consacrés à Django Reinhardt, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday et Louis Armstrong, la collection Saga rend hommage à la « First Lady of Song », Ella Fitzgerald.
Marc Thomas, chanteur, scatteur, saxophoniste, nous avait déjà fait découvrir l’univers de Lady Day ; il récidive avec celle qui occupe, depuis son enfance, confie-t-il, une place à part dans sa vie, et nous propose un choix d’interprétations « coup de cœur ».

De ses débuts avec l’orchestre de Chick Webb en 1936, jusqu’aux premiers albums dédiés aux grands compositeurs populaires américains (les fameux « Song Books ») : de la fraîcheur charmante de ses 19 ans à la maturité éblouissante d’émotion et de justesse de ton. Sans oublier les étincelants scats bebop en compagnie du big band de Dizzy Gillespie et quelques splendides duos : tendres avec Louis Armstrong, complices avec Louis Jordan, brillants avec Joe Williams.
Malgré son trac et sa timidité, elle se donnait si entièrement à la musique et à son auditoire que sa joie de chanter évidente et son swing irrépressible lui valurent l’estime des musiciens, le respect des critiques et l’adoration du public. 

Un superbe coffret de trois CD comprenant un livret en couleur richement illustré (photos, partitions, pochettes), une préface de Claude Carrière, une sélection de 68 titres commentés par Marc Thomas, une étude de Philippe Baudoin sur les citations musicales parsemant l’œuvre de la chanteuse.
